“Singing is one of the primary ways that the assembly of the faithful participates actively in the Liturgy. The people are encouraged ‘to take part by means of acclamations, responses, psalms, antiphons [and] hymns…’ [Second Vatican Council, Sacrosanctum Concilium].  The musical formation of the assembly must be a continuing concern in order to foster full, conscious, and active participation.” – United States Bishops, Sing to the Lord (2007)

The Primary Singing Voice in the Liturgy

“The full and active participation by all the people is the aim to be considered before all else, for it is the primary and indispensable source from which the faithful are to derive the true Christian spirit” (Sacrosanctum Concilium). All music ministry at St. Angela Merici parish begins by affirming the Church’s teaching that the primary singing voice in the liturgy is the voice of the congregation.

Parish Choir

The Parish Choir leads the congregation in song roughly every other Sunday (9:30 a.m. Mass) and on major feasts and solemnities. Rehearsals are every Thursday evening from 7:00 to 8:30. The Parish Choir serves year-round, with a lighter schedule in the summer. Cantors intone the responsorial psalm and other dialogues and acclamations; and facilitate congregational singing when the choir is absent.

We are always looking to grow the Parish Choir, so new members are welcome at any time. Choir members must be able to match pitch and carry a tune; the ability to read music can be helpful but is not required. Anyone interested in joining the choir as a regular member should contact music director Danny O’Brien. Those who cannot commit to singing in the choir all year but are willing to help increase the choir on specific occasions (such as Christmas Eve, Confirmation, Pentecost, etc.) should also contact the music director to discuss these opportunities.

Grade School Music Ministry

Lower School: All students in the lower school are music ministers. Grades 1–5 take turns serving as the choir at all lower-school Masses and some all-school Masses. Opportunities to sing at 9:30 a.m. Mass as part of a Sunday children’s choir are offered periodically throughout the year, and all lower-school students are eligible to participate. There is no rehearsal required outside of school hours.

Upper School: The upper-school choir is a voluntary ministry at St. Angela Merici School; this group serves at all upper-school Masses and some all-school Masses. Any student in grades 6–8 may join Upper School Music Ministry, but attendance at rehearsals is required. As of the fall semester of 2026, Upper-School Music Ministry practice is Monday afternoons from 2:30 to 3:30. Upper-school music ministers are periodically invited to join in with the Parish Choir on special occasions like the Solemnity of Christ the King, the Sacrament of Confirmation, and Pentecost; these opportunities to do music ministry outside of school may be counted toward service requirements for Confirmation.
